AFX slotcars were introduced in 1971 by Aurora to combat the advent of the Tycopro. Known as Aurora Factory Experimentals by their full name, these HO slotcars originally were without magnetic attraction to the rails, which we refer to as "standard AFX". The cars still weren't as fast as a Tycopro on the straights, but they made up for it by being a better handling, more controllable car which was easier to maintain than the temperamental Tycopro. In '74 the change was made to AFX magnatraction and the result was a better handling car. AFX G-plus came next with the conversion to the inline style motor, followed by variations on those themes which included magnasonic cars with sound plates, speed shifters, SP 1000, super magna traction cars, as well as the slotless speed steer and ultra 5 cars...and the list goes on. The AFX slot car line which lasted until 1983 truly was a grand experiment in toy electric slot cars that many of us are still enjoying the results of today.
